Presenter: Dr Sharon Truter (Registered Neuropsychologist and Counselling Psychologist)
Attendees of this workshop will learn to administer tests that are suitable for use with children and adults who speak any South African language, who have low or high SES and who have primary school to tertiary levels of education of an advantaged or disadvantaged quality. Where limitations apply, these will be discussed.
Attendees will be taught how to administer the following tests:
- Reading and Writing: ESSI Test
- Orientation and Attention: Digit Span Three-Trial Test (Forwards); Trail Making Test A
- Processing Speed: Symbol Digit Modalities Test – Alternate Form C
- Working Memory: Digit Span Three-Trial Test (Backwards)
- Memory: Rey Complex Figure Test Immediate Recall & Delayed Recall; Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test & Delayed Recall
- Language: Semantic/category fluency tests, phonemic/letter fluency test: S, B & L, verb/action fluency tests
- Visuospatial Functioning: Rey Complex Figure Test: Copy; Bell Cancellation Test; Clock Drawing Test
- Motor Function and Construction: Luria’s Three-Step Test; Coin Rotation Test
- Executive Functions: Trail Making Test B; Five Point Test; verbal fluency tests
- Malingering: Rey 15-Item Test Plus Recognition; Dot Counting test; RAVLT Effort Equation
Norms for these tests are available in “Cross-Cultural Cognitive Test Norms: An Advanced Collation from Africa” by Shuttleworth-Edwards and Truter. This book will be available at a discounted rate for attendees for a limited time.
Programme:
09:00 – 10:30: Part 1: Introduction, basic assessment principles
10:30 – 11:00: Tea break
11:00 – 12:30: Part 2: Test administration of specific tests (1 ½ hours)
12:30 – 13:30: Lunch break
13:30 – 15:00: Part 3: Test administration of specific tests (1 ½ hours)
15:00 – 15:30: Tea break
15:30 – 17:00: Part 4: Test administration for specific tests, practical assignment introduction and conclusion (1 ½ hours)
Compulsory Assignment:
Attendees will be required to do a practical assignment as part of the course. This is to reinforce what was learned during the workshop, to gain experience in the test administration, and to collect further norms on the tests.
Attendees will need to find and assess three or more child volunteers who meet the following inclusion and exclusion criteria.
- Inclusion criteria:
- South African citizen
- Aged 8-17 years;
- In Grades 1-12.
- Speaks English well enough to have at least a basic conversation in English
- Consent from parent and assent from child
- Exclusion criteria:
- Two or more grades repeated
- Head injury with loss of consciousness for half an hour or longer
- History of neurological or psychiatric diagnoses
- Learning difficulties or ADHD
- Drug or alcohol abuse
- At least two participants must have had an education of a disadvantaged quality (ex-DET school/ Quintile 1, 2 or 3 school). The other may have had an education of an advantaged (private/ex-Model C school/Quintile 4 or 5 school) or disadvantaged quality.
