29 August 2024Basics to Beyond: Foundational Course in Neuropsychology 2025
4 November 2024Fair and Ethical Cognitive Assessment:
New Expectations and Guidelines
Workshop content:
Many psychologists use psychometric tests because they are familiar with them and/or were trained on them. This is irrespective of whether or not they are obsolete, valid and reliable for particular examinees, or have suitable norms. Some psychologists have not even read tests’ technical manuals to check for these factors (and some have not realised that certain well-known tests were bought without those manuals)!
This easily leads to incorrect test score interpretation, incorrect diagnoses and inappropriate recommendations.
According to the HPCSA, psychologists are responsible for ensuring that tests used are “appropriate for the purpose that they are applied, are psychometrically sound, and that their content, construct coverage, and norms are both appropriate for the target population and are up to date”. However, in the multi-lingual, multi-cultural South African context with socioeconomic inequality and limited adapted tests, this can be difficult.
This workshop will highlight the challenges of cross-cultural, cross-lingual cognitive assessment but also provide solutions to cognitive functions of clients, particularly those who are not English first language speaking, taking account the educational and cultural factors that also affect test scores.
The workshop is based on the book, “Cognitive Test Norms: An Advanced Collation from Africa” by Shuttleworth-Edwards and Truter. The presenter, a co-author of the book, will discuss the guidelines and solutions that the book offers, and explain on a practical level how to use the book’s extensive normative data so that fair and ethical assessments are done.
