Disorders of Consciousness: Assessment, Diagnosis and Management
26 February 2026Advanced Functional Neuroanatomy Level 1
CONTENT:
This practical, clinically focused course helps psychologists build a clear and confident understanding of functional neuroanatomy and how it applies to everyday clinical work. The course combines step-by-step learning of brain structures with guided, hands-on practice in reading MRI scans. Using a structured approach based on the brain’s gyri and sulci, the programme covers the major brain lobes, cerebellum, brainstem, limbic system, basal ganglia and thalamus, and explains important Brodmann areas and white-matter pathways in a clear, applied way.
Participants will learn to:
Confidently identify major cortical and subcortical brain structures
Understand key white-matter systems and why they are important for function
Link brain structures to cognitive, sensory, motor and behavioural problems
Read MRI scans in axial, coronal and sagittal views
Apply lesion localisation skills to conditions such as stroke, tumours, epilepsy and neurodegenerative disorders
The course is ideal for psychologists who are working in neuropsychology or who want to move into this field, as well as for neurologists and other clinicians who want a stronger understanding of brain–behaviour relationships in clinical practice.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:
"I had the privilege of attending the advanced functional neuroanatomy course presented by Dr. Vigneswaran Veeramuthu, and I can state without hesitation that it is one of the most intellectually rigorous and clinically relevant educational experiences I have undertaken.
As a registered counselling psychologist and university lecturer with a strong interest in neuropsychology, I have completed many professional courses over the years. What distinguishes Dr. Veeramuthu’s programme is the depth of integration between neuroanatomical structure, brain networks, and real-world clinical presentation. Rather than presenting neuroanatomy as a static body of knowledge, the course develops a dynamic understanding of brain–behaviour relationships, grounded in case-based reasoning and contemporary neuroimaging.
Participants are challenged to think like clinical neuropsychologists. The course moves well beyond memorisation of structures and instead requires the integration of gyri, sulci, Brodmann areas, white-matter tracts, and functional networks into coherent diagnostic reasoning.
This specialised knowledge has had a direct impact on my professional work. The course has strengthened my ability to conceptualise psychological and cognitive presentations within a brain-behaviour framework, informing both neuropsychological assessment and therapeutic formulation. It has deepened my understanding of how structural and functional brain systems relate to attention, executive functioning, emotional regulation, and behavioural presentation in clinical populations. This integration has enriched both my clinical practice and my teaching of neuropsychology to postgraduate psychology students." Dr Brenda Beukman, Counselling Psychologist
"Attending the Functional Neuroanatomy course presented by Dr Vic was an exceptional professional experience. The teaching was clear, clinically grounded, and intellectually rigorous, translating complex brain–behaviour relationships into practical frameworks directly applicable to formulation and intervention. As a Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist, I have found the material immensely valuable in refining my treatment formulations and enhancing the depth of my supervisory work with other psychologists. I would highly recommend this course to neuropsychologists at all stages of their careers, as well as to any clinician with a serious interest in applied neuroanatomy and brain–behaviour integration." Henk Swanepoel, Clinical Psychologist and Neuropsychologist
